Spanish rock legend Bunbury kicked off his Hurracan Ambulante tour back in June and cruised through South and Central America before stopping by the US for two select dates only. I was lucky to make it to the last one, in Anaheim, CA.
Bunbury Brings the Hurracan Ambulante Tour to Anaheim
The Honda Center’s stage received a make-over for the evening as Bunbury brought his circus vibe along with red velvet curtains that made for great visuals. The name Hurracan Ambulante (Walking Hurricane) refers to his backing band which played with him from the late 90’s until the mid 2000’s. For this tour, Bunbury got the old crew back together, and the musicians hit the stage around 9pm. Javi Inigo (trumpet) and Javier Garcia-Vega (trombone) appeared in costumes that fitted the décor perfectly. The backdrop screen displayed the message “Bunbury presents: Hurracan Ambulante” as the band started playing an instrumental cover of Nino Rota’s “Otto E Mezzo” which only reinforced the circus feeling.
The 57-year-old singer appeared from the back of the stage and the whole arena shook harder than when the Ducks score a goal. As per usual, the man from Zaragoza looked like a thousand bucks, rocking a shiny orange suit that no one else could pull off. He opened with “El Club De Los Imposibles” from his 2002 classic Flamingos. The bar was set high from the get-go but kept on topping it as he followed up with one of my favorites “De Mayor”. Beyond being an amazing and inimitable singer, “Kike” is also quite the showman and it’s almost impossible to take your eyes off him.
A Setlist Spanning Decades of Spanish Rock
The career-spanning setlist was perfect and had a little bit of everything from the electric-rock “Big-Bang” from his debut album to the ballad “Las Chingadas Ganas De Llorar” from Cuentas Pendientes, his thirteenth album released earlier this year. It was such a treat to experience live “Apuesta Por El Rock’n’roll”, another personal favorite. I honestly do not remember attending any other show where the entire audience sung every single word to every single song with such passion. Bunbury’s status as one of the best Spanish rock singers is clearly undeniable.
Encore and Farewell – A Night to Remember
The musicians left on a high note with “Lady Blue”, only to come back minutes later for a five-songs encore that ended with “El Jinete” and “Al Final” which was the perfect ending to a perfect evening. One of my very first encounters with hard rock as a kid was the discovery of Heroes Del Silencio’s 1993 El Espiritu Del Vino back in Spain, and finally catching Bunbury live nearly three decades later seems kind of surreal.
One thing is for sure, I will not miss him again when he comes back around. And for the lucky ones in Spain or Buenos Aires there are a few more dates coming up in September, although half of them are sold-out already.

La leyenda del rock español Bunbury inició su gira Hurracán Ambulante en junio y recorrió Sudamérica y Centroamérica antes de pasar por Estados Unidos para solo dos fechas. Tuve la suerte de asistir a la última, en Anaheim, California.
Bunbury trae el tour del Huracán Ambulante a Anaheim
El escenario del Honda Center se renovó esa noche, y Bunbury trajo su ambiente circense, con cortinas de terciopelo rojo que crearon un ambiente visual espectacular. El nombre Hurracán Ambulante hace referencia a la banda que lo acompañó desde finales de los 90 hasta mediados de los 2000. Para esta gira, Bunbury reunió a su antiguo equipo y los músicos subieron al escenario alrededor de las 9 de la tarde. Javi Íñigo (trompeta) y Javier García-Vega (trombón) aparecieron con trajes que combinaban a la perfección con la decoración. La pantalla de fondo mostraba el mensaje “Bunbury presenta: Hurracán Ambulante” mientras la banda comenzaba a tocar una versión instrumental de “Otto E Mezzo” de Nino Rota, lo que reforzó aún más el ambiente de circo.
El cantante de 57 años apareció desde el fondo del escenario y todo el recinto tembló con más fuerza que cuando los Ducks marcan un gol. Como de costumbre, el zaragozano aparecio con mucha clase, en un traje naranja brillante que nadie más podía llevar. Abrió con “El Club De Los Imposibles” de su clásico de 2002, Flamingos. El listón estaba muy alto desde el principio, pero no dejó de superarlo al seguir con una de mis canciones favoritas, “De Mayor”. Además de ser un cantante increíble e inimitable, “Kike” también es un showman incredible y es casi imposible apartar la vista de él.
Una lista de canciones que abarca décadas de rock español
El repertorio, que abarca toda su carrera, fue perfecto e incluyó un poco de todo, desde el rock eléctrico “Big-Bang”, de su primer álbum, hasta la balada “Las Chingadas Ganas De Llorar” de Cuentas Pendientes, su decimotercer álbum, publicado a principios de este año. Fue un auténtico placer disfrutar en directo de “Apuesta Por El Rock’n’roll”, otra de mis canciones favoritas. Sinceramente, no recuerdo haber asistido a ningún otro concierto donde el público entero cantara cada letra de cada canción con tanta pasión. El estatus de Bunbury como uno de los mejores cantantes de rock español es innegable.
Bis y despedida: una noche para recordar
Los músicos se marcharon por todo lo alto con “Lady Blue”, para regresar minutos después con un bis de cinco canciones que culminó con “El Jinete” y “Al Final”, el broche de oro para una noche perfecta. Uno de mis primeros encuentros con el hard rock de niño fue descubrir El Espíritu del Vino de Heroes Del Silencio (1993) en España, y ver a Bunbury en directo casi tres décadas después al otro lado del mundo todavia me parece un poco surrealista.
Una cosa es segura: no lo me lo voy a perder nunca mas cuando vuelva por aqui. Y para los afortunados que estén en España o Buenos Aires, hay algunas fechas más en septiembre, aunque la mitad ya están agotadas.
