Chevelle released their tenth record, Bright As Blasphemy, in August and have been extensively touring across the country to promote their new material. On September 26th they stopped at The Hollywood Palladium to please their Angeleno fanbase with a killer show supported by two other great acts: Asking Alexandria and Dead Poet Society.

Dead Poet Society Start The Party with a High-Energy Performance

I had been wanting to catch Dead Poet Society for sometime now so I made sure to get their early as I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. And indeed, disappointed I was not. The band from Boston started strong with one of the hits from their breakthrough album -!- (2021) “.Intodeep.”.

The band made the best of their short allocated time, blending older hits and songs from their last record Fission (2024). Frontman Jack Underkofler (guitar and vocals) interacted with the crowd in-between songs, making sure the crowd stayed locked in throughout the show and that the energy wouldn’t die down. When it came to energy, bassist Dylan Brenner put on a show of his own. It was impossible not to be mesmerized by his stage presence as he never stood still and kept bouncing off the walls like a kid high on candy.

I loved their live rendition of personal favorite “.CoDa.”. They closed their set with a couple of more recent tracks “Running In Circles” and “HURT”.

Asking Alexandria Deliver a Powerful Metalcore Set

Next up to come to the stage was Asking Alexandria which I was not as familiar with, but was excited to see as I kept hearing great things about their live performances. I now understand why. The British metalcore outfit is a well-oiled machine. Although none of the original members of the band remain since Ben Bruce’s departure, the current line-up has been the same for over fifteen years. So needless to say, they are a pretty bonded team.

Their set covered all eras of AA’s carreer, opening with “Things Could Be Different” from their last album Where Do We Go From Here? (2023), and closing with “The Final Episode (Let’s Change The Channel)” from their 2009 debut.

Of course fans of their self-titled album (potentially their more popular release) where not left disappointed as they were treated with hits like “Into The Fire” and “Alone In A Room”. It had been a minute since I had seen so much crowd surfing at a show. Personal favorite “Down To Hell” was definitely one of the highlights of their set.

Chevelle Bring Bright As Blasphemy to Life in Los Angeles

At 9pm, the lights turned off again and a video played on the screen at the back of the stage, displaying visuals inspired by the new album artwork. The Loeffler brothers and bassist Kemble Walters stepped on stage which was enough to throw the crowd into a frenzy.

Before the lights even turned on, the first trippy guitar notes of “Family System” came out of the speaker which triggered shouts and claps from the room. It was clear from the start, Chevelle were on their A game as they always are. And because the bar was raised so high already, they could only follow up with another hit “The Clincher” which turned the Palladium into a choir for the melodic chorus that everyone sung as one. Pete’s energy was incredible and his voice was perfect, switching with ease from aggressive screaming to aerial melodies.

As is always the case, Sam Loeffler was a beast behind the kit, holding the groove while bringing so much power to the trio’s sound. Kemble also brings an incredible energy to the stage which makes for a perfect combo. We were treated with a few songs from Bright As Blasphemy, including “Wolves (Love & Light)” which was performed for the first time.

The new record sounds closer to 2016’s, The North Corridor, bringing back that heavy sound that hits you like a wall of bricks. The crowd surfing that was started earlier that evening kept going for the remainder of the show, and you could see some of the same faces surfing the crowd all over again as soon as they got to the back of the crowd.

Chevelle Live Is Where It’s AT

Hearing live some of my personal favorites like “Face To The Floor” or the more recent “Self Destructor” was incredible. I had seen them live before and heard those songs live already, but it simply never gets old. Chevelle has kept releasing such high quality songs and records with consistence for over twenty years now, and they put on such amazing shows each time. They’re in my opinion a band that any rock fan should check out live at least once. As always, their 2002 Wonder What’s Next was well represented in the setlist with the unavoidable classics “Send The Pain Below” and “The Red” which remain timeless and hit as hard today as they did when they first came out.

We were treated with quite the generous five-songs encore which ended strong with “I Get It” and the groovy “Mars Simula”. As you’re reading those lines, the tour is probably over already or close to it. Luckily for Chevelle’s fans or intrigued rock lovers, these guys never stay too long off the road so chances are you’ll be able to catch them soon. If you’ve missed them this time, this is your reminder not to sleep on them next time around. And if you’ve already seen them, chances are you’ll go back for more just like me.
