Supergrass are celebrating their debut album I Should Coco’s 30th anniversary with a handful of shows this month. After a first date in Mexico City, the British lads made their first US stop in LA for a sold out evening at the Hollywood Palladium.
Sports Team – I Discovered a New Team to Support
Opening the festivities were another band from England, Sports Team. I was not familiar with them prior to the show, but I’ll say it right away, this is one of the best discoveries I’ve made this year. The energy the band brought to the stage was all we could have dreamed of to get the night started.
Each member seemed to have some raw and magnetic presence that captivated the audience’s attention. Some songs like The Drop reminded me of other vibrant bands like Viagra Boys. Although they came out rockin’, they mellowed things down a bit for the second half of their set with calmer tunes like I’m In Love (Subaru). Lead vocalist Alex Rice took a moment to salute Supergrass and thank them for bringing them along on tour. I LOVED the closer Stanton. Its shifting dynamics led into a glorious crescendo that left the crowd buzzing as the stage was reset for the headliners.
Supergrass Return – Brit-pop Legends Reignite Los Angeles
I had never seen Supergrass live and didn’t think it would happen as the band been primarily on hiatus since 2010. Supergrass had only briefly reunited during the “Covid Years”, with their “final” apparition of an appearance at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in London. However, earlier this year Supergrass announced a handful of dates in the UK, Australia and America for the 30th anniversary of their debut breakthrough album I Should Coco. Although I must confess it isn’t my favorite of their records, it remains nonetheless their most popular and iconic. And I couldn’t miss a chance to finally see them on stage.
I Should Coco Performed in Full
A little after 9pm, a black curtain at the back of the stage dropped revealing the classic album’s cover printed up on a giant screen. The crowd got loud in anticipation of what was yet to come as the lights dimmed for the second time. Gaz Coombes and his bandmates were received by loud cheers from the audience.
The band opened with I’d Like To Know and Caught By The Fuzz which took the room to a boiling point right from the start. If one thing was obvious is that these three-decades old songs have not lost a bit of their youthful energy. The band from Oxford took a detour and played a couple of songs outside I Should Coco: Late In The Day and a personal favorite Mary. Moments later the band played their #1 hit Alright which had some fans bouncing off the walls, it was quite something to witness.
Closing with Classics
Supergrass kept on going and played the rest of their debut in full, taking time to acknowledge their original fans for still going strong thirty years later. The band finished the show on a high note with a succession of hits, Richard III, Grace and personal favorite Moving. After shortly leaving the stage, the band came back for a two-song encore to finish strong with Sun Hits The Sky and the Rolling Stonesque Pumping Your Stereo.
Final Thoughts – Supergrass Still Alright, 30 Years Later
There are a few other shows planned in the US so you might still have a chance to catch Supergrass if you’re in Chicago, New York or Boston. Otherwise we might have to wait until I Should Coco turns 40, a decade from now. Who knows, they might as well be back in a couple of years for the In It For The Money 30th anniversary. And until then, you can still checkout Sports Team and give them a listen, they’re definitely worth it.
